Education for Humanity Projects

At City College Birmingham, we are committed to transforming lives through the power of education—especially in communities affected by displacement, crisis, and limited access to formal learning. Our Education for Humanity Projects reflect this mission.

We work in partnership with grassroots organizations and international stakeholders to co-create inclusive, flexible, and accredited education programs that respond directly to the realities of refugees and host communities. By blending online learning tools with offline, face-to-face support, we ensure that no learner is left behind—no matter their location or background.

For learners who have primarily experienced face-to-face classrooms—or whose education was interrupted—online learning can feel unfamiliar or inaccessible. That’s why our University Preparation modules are designed to smooth the transition into the digital academic world.

Our curriculum covers:

  • Digital literacy and professional online communication
  • Time management, study skills, and self-directed learning techniques
  • Academic integrity and information literacy

These modules help learners develop the habits and confidence needed to succeed in remote learning environments. In-person tutoring and mentoring from local partners reinforces these lessons, building a strong foundation for further education.

Outcome: Learners are empowered to pursue online university degrees with confidence and competence.

For many displaced individuals, access to university is restricted by circumstances beyond their control—lost transcripts, disrupted schooling, or lack of formal accreditation.

Our Earned Admissions initiative provides a practical solution. Through this model, learners can take credit-bearing university courses online, which:

  • Serve as recognised credentials by many academic institutions
  • Build a learner’s academic record from scratch
  • Allow entry into degree programs through performance-based evidence, not just paperwork

We work closely with partner universities to expand recognition of these courses, creating bridges for learners who have the ambition and ability—but not the conventional documentation—to thrive in higher education.

Outcome: A wider, more equitable doorway into university education.

Proficiency in English opens countless doors—whether in education, the workforce, or global communication. Our Learn English Now courses offer a practical, culturally-sensitive approach to language acquisition.

Learners develop their skills in:

  • Speaking, listening, reading, and writing
  • Navigating formal education and business environments
  • Digital fluency
  • and online collaboration

The courses are interactive, scenario-based, and supported with in-person tutoring, helping learners build both fluency and confidence. Beyond vocabulary and grammar, we teach language as a tool for agency, self-expression, and community participation.

Outcome: Learners are empowered to engage in education, employment, and life with confidence and competence.

Education must be practical—and nowhere is this more important than in refugee and host communities striving for self-reliance.

We design our Workforce Skills programs around:

  • The real needs of local economies
  • Learner aspirations
  • The changing demands of global employment

Based on extensive field research across camps, settlements, and urban hubs in the Middle East and East Africa, we offer courses in:

  • Agribusiness: sustainable farming, supply chains, food entrepreneurship
  • Entrepreneurship: business basics, innovation, financial literacy, and micro-enterprise creation

We also support learners in developing “soft skills” such as teamwork, leadership, and digital collaboration.

Outcome: Learners develop income-generating skills and confidence to build sustainable futures—for themselves and their communities.

Displacement doesn’t diminish potential—it delays opportunity. Education can restore it.

At City College Birmingham, we believe that investing in the education of displaced populations is not only a moral responsibility—it’s a strategy for long-term stability, innovation, and peacebuilding. Our projects:

  • Promote social integration and inclusion
  • Encourage economic self-sufficiency
  • Foster cross-cultural understanding and community resilience

Every course delivered is more than content—it's an act of hope, dignity, and possibility.

Whether you’re an NGO, university, social enterprise, or donor—we invite you to join us in expanding access to meaningful education.

  • Co-design new programs with our team
  • Expand our reach into new regions
  • Fund specific learning tracks or innovation pilots
  • Support refugee learners through scholarships, tech donations, or mentorship

Together, we can build a world where education belongs to everyone.

If you’re a learner seeking flexible, accredited courses designed for real-world success, we’re here for you.
